Today, a customer asked me a question about speed control motors…
Apparently they want to make gravitational operations while controlling speed.

In that case, we recommend the brushless motor BXII series and the BLE series motor with electromagnetic brake.

  • Mr. Vex

Ok. But how these two are able to perform gravitational operation?

  • Ms. Ori

Oh Vex, you need to study a little bit more. Brushless motors receive feedback signals from the motor and generates torque in the direction of rotation at the instructed speed. That's why it can control speed accurately even in gravitational operations.
However, the rotors of brushless motors are equipped with permanent magnets, so during gravitational operations, the motor itself becomes a generator and creates regenerative power. If this condition continues, the driver's overvoltage alarm will trigger.
The BXII and BLE Series have a function that can absorb this regenerative power, so they can work in gravitational operations.
Oh, and don't forget to introduce the regeneration resistors of accessories.

  • Mr. Vex

I see. But then, in general, could an inverter even work for gravitational operations?

  • Ms. Ori

That’s right. There is also an electromagnetic brake type inverters and three-phase induction motors that can be used in gravitational operations.

  • Mr. Vex

Which one would be better for my customer?

  • Ms. Ori

I'm sure they'll be satisfied with either types for gravitational operations.
However, brushless motors have many other advantages. Do you know what they are?

  • Mr. Vex

Yes. Brushless motors feature flat and compact constructions. They also provide the benefits of flat torque over a wide speed range, low speed fluctuation, and reliable operations.

  • Ms. Ori

That's right. Brushless motors can also help the customers from an energy-saving standpoint.

Yes. I’m going to tell our customers about the advantages of brushless motors right away!
…By the way, can't you also use an AC speed control motor for gravitational operation?

  • Ms. Ori

With AC speed control motors, speed control may not be possible if the shaft is rotated by gravity or other forces.

  • Mr. Vex

Ok. But we often hear about them being used in vertical operations, for example, to control speed during ascending and for full speed during descending.
Also, depending on the gearhead gear ratio and the mechanism, it may be possible to control the speed without turning due to frictional loads, right?

  • Ms. Ori

    Yes! You really know it!

  • Mr. Vex

Oh, thank you. So it's about finding the right piece of equipment. I’ll do everything I can to recommend the best product for our customer’s equipment.
